That is why we are pleased to offer sedation dentistry options, such as oral sedation, to help ease your anxiety so you can receive the dental care you need.

Sedation dentistry provides options to help keep anxious patients calm, relaxed and comfortable during their dental visit and treatments. By using a combination of sedatives and comfort measures, Dawson Dental Centre ensures that taking care of your oral health needs does not need to be a source of anxiety or stress.

Oral sedation offers the option of light to moderate sedation for anxious patients. This is done by taking one or two prescribed pills of a sedative medication before a procedure or appointment. The sedative is strong enough to bring about a feeling of sleepiness that results in a more relaxed state during your treatment and a reduced sense of stress and anxiety. An initial dose of medication is taken approximately one hour before your appointment. If needed, an additional dose may be taken the night before a procedure to help with anxiety-related insomnia.

Nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as laughing gas, offers an easy and simple option of light sedation for anxious patients. A mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, it is administered by breathing in through a mask that is placed over the nose. The effects occur almost instantaneously once inhaled, and diminish very quickly once the gas is no longer being consumed. This allows patients to carry on with their day soon after leaving the dentist. Because it does not cause patients to lose consciousness, most patients will be able to respond to any questions from the dentist. Nitrous oxide is safe to use on children and older patients, making it a good sedative option for any patient requiring sedation.
